Back Pain FAQs

If you are suffering from back pain, it's probably time to see a chiropractor. If you have never visited one before, however, it is likely that you have a lot of questions. We at Renton Center Chiropractic and Massage Therapy in Renton, WA, know a lot about chiropractic care for back pain. While a chiropractor on our team will take the time to answer all your questions, we gathered some of our most frequently asked questions for you to review before booking an appointment.

Does treatment hurt?

Generally, no. Unlike what you may have heard, chiropractic care does not move the bones of the body. A chiropractor will only move muscles in small increments. They are not pulled or strained. Most patients will get immediate pain relief.

How long is an appointment?

Your initial appointment usually takes about an hour, but after that all other appointments will usually only take about fifteen to thirty minutes.

How often do I need to see a chiropractor?

The exact number of sessions you will need will depend on the severity of your injury and the speed at which your body will heal. Typically, though, people will start seeing a chiropractor at our practice a weekly basis, and within a few months they will see him or her once a month.

Can I stay on my pain medication while getting treatment?

Yes. While one of the goals of your sessions can be to reduce your need of these medications, it's fine for you to use them as a doctor prescribed them.

How does the chiropractor help my back pain?

A chiropractor works by slowly moving the muscles of your back by small amounts. The pain in your back is caused by a misalignment of the muscles in your back. This may have happened because of a single accident, or it may have been a process that occurred over time. Either way, these misaligned muscles will cause additional pressure on the nerves in your back, sending pain signals to your brain. By realigning the muscles slowly over time, this pressure is alleviated. With regular treatment, the muscles will move and stay in their proper alignment, giving the patient a pain-free life.

What happens when I'm pain-free?

Once the muscles are back in their proper alignment, it may be a good idea to visit one of our chiropractors periodically to make sure that nothing has moved out of place. This is called a maintenance phase.
